Labor MPs have agreed to support the Religious Discrimination Bill in the House of Representatives so they can pass their amendments in the Senate, where the government does not hold the majority.

Following a series of meetings the Labor politicians agreed on Wednesday to support the government’s religious bill through the lower house even if their amendments are not successful.

Amendments to the Sex Discrimination Act will protect students based on their sexuality, while the Australian Law Reform Commission will review existing anti-discrimination laws to examine whether transgender students can be further protected.Several MPs have expressed hesitancy to support the bill including Liberal MP Bridget Archer who has vowed to cross the floor on the bill.

Nationals leader and Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce said schools should still have the right to protect their faith and the rights of parents sending their children to independent religious schools.
