OPINION: The summit cannot be hijacked by the usual vested interests, an excuse to pull the industrial relations playbook from the bottom drawer.

For an Albanese government voted into office by a grudging electorate after a policy-light election campaign, the jobs and skills summit to be held at Parliament House in Canberra on September 1 and 2 will be essential to give the government some purpose and drive.

Mr Hawke’s 1983 legendary economic summit tackled a real crisis and set the tone for a decade of serious reform and a new economic order: “the decade when things happened” as’s 70th anniversary coverage put it. To be avoided is Kevin Rudd’s “2020 summit” held in 2008 – a 1000-strong bean bag and butcher paper-style carnival of self-indulgence that set the tone for a scattergun government.
