The government has slashed the backlog of visa applications, which was 1 million before the election. Ms O’Neil will say the backlog is down to almost 500,000. “And indeed, many of you in this audience would observe the conduct of other countries that are driving the war for talent, relentlessly identifying the skills they need, finding them around the world, and inviting those migrants to join their national endeavours.
“For a decade, every problem that has emerged has been solved with new rule or bureaucratic fix,” she will say.
