Anthony Albanese says he would establish a medical manufacturing fund worth $1.5 billion, to avoid a repeat of COVID-19 shortages.

An incoming Labor government would move to firm up Australia’s medical goods supply chains through the creation of a new $1.5 billion fund, designed to avoid a repeat of COVID-19 shortages.

The new fund will be managed by the independent board established under Labor’s national reconstruction body, overseen by deputy leader Richard Marles. Mr Husic said Australian firms had capability to make essential medical supplies, but needed renewed engagement from government. Mr Albanese will address a Leadership Matters breakfast in Perth on Tuesday morning, before travelling back to the eastern states for the final days of the campaign. He will speak at the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday.Labor has also announced plans to bolster fuel security for Australian troops, through a $5 million grant to biotech firm Licella for the development of a commercial bio-refinery.
