Victorian Labor MP Ben Carroll has been canvassing support in case Premier Daniel Andrews makes an early exit, amid a shake-up of the Labor factions.

Victorian Labor MP Ben Carroll has been canvassing support in the event of an early exit by Premier Daniel Andrews, amid a shake-up of the Labor factions and a potential challenge toMr Andrews insists he will serve another full term until the next state election in 2026, but sources inside the party said most Labor MPs expected him to leave by the end of the year or early next year.

“I’ve just said that for about the 100th time in the last few months,” he said. “I am honoured to have been chosen on three occasions now to lead this state.”Kos Samaras, a former Labor strategist and a director at pollster RedBridge Group, said while his money was on Mr Andrews departing this term, “this man has built a career doing things people think he can’t do”.

Labor MPs have been sounded out on whether Minister for Public Transport, Ben Carroll, could challenge Jacinta Allan as the next premier.. Late last year the faction’s numbers were bolstered by seven Right-aligned members, including Mr Pallas, which some insiders claim remains a source of tension ahead of the state budget in two weeks.

“The Right will try to organise a challenge,” one Labor insider said. “At the moment the Left is locked in behind Jacinta [Allan] but if any part of the Left splinters, it becomes very tight.” The factional shake-up leaves one faction linked to the Australian Workers Union – which includes Assistant Treasurer Danny Pearson and Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes – unaligned.
