The Albanese government will pour more than $4 billion into urgently building up stockpiles of missiles, artillery shells and sea mines, including establishing local production.

, including establishing local production centres and ordering one weapon that will give the army the ability to strike targets 500 kilometres away., the Albanese government wants officials to come up with concrete plans to establish a local missile industry by the end of the year, pledging to more than double funding to $2.5 billion over four years to make it happen.

“They are not all going to be firing missiles at ships,” he said. “The most disappointing feature of it is how it chucks down the track for four years any prospect of a defence spending increase. The funding story is disastrous.” Of this, $1.6 billion will go to buying long-range strike capabilities off-the-shelf from the US. This includes speeding up the purchase of the truck-mounted High Mobility Artillery Rocket System beyond the 20 already ordered, at a cost of $US385 million.
