A senior industry official has questioned NSW Labor’s proposed gambling reforms and argued the sweeping changes would reach “far wider” than the state’s Crime Commission’s recommendations.

The Opposition Leader announced his eight point plan to reform gambling in the state on Monday with an emphasis on curbing the use of poker machines by organised crime to launder money.

“Remembering that the Crime Commission found that money laundering in pubs and clubs across NSW and predominantly Sydney was not widespread. It is there, but we’ve got poker machines right across NSW, pubs and clubs that are part of society, part of the community.” Welcoming the trial, Mr Green said it would allow for more informed and “evidence-based” decisions on cashless gaming.“What we said after the first recommendation about bringing in cashless gaming is that it was untested it was un-costed. At least we have the opportunity now to do a trial and to look at the impact.

Labor also proposed expanding the self-exclusion program to allow for third-party exclusion giving family members and police the ability to ban patrons from gambling, including those suspected to be money laundering. “In relation to money laundering, what we’ve said right from the start is we don’t want criminal activity in our venues but we want to identify those people that commit the crimes or are dealing with proceeds of crime,” he said.
