New transmission lines are critical if Australia is to accelerate the development of zero emission generation and meet its net zero by 2050 commitment.

While new generation is coming online at a rapid rate, it is struggling to compensate for the loss of huge fossil fuel generation that continues to be the dominant source of electricity in Australia –

Offering a boost to the Labor government grappling with the impact of an energy crunch, Anna Collyer – chair of the Australian Energy Market Commission – said developing new transmission lines now would ensure customers are not hit harder later.“We as an industry grapple with just in time. Either the transmission is going to be too early, in which case customers pay earlier, or it’s going to be too late and customers really will pay for that.

“There will be no transition without transmissions, so we have to get going,” said Brett Redman, chief executive officer of Transgrid and former head of AGL Energy.Earlier this year, hundreds of farmers rallied outside Victoria’s state parliament in opposition to AusNet’s proposed Western Victorian Transmission Network Project .

Amid mounting anger, Labor earlier this year said it would overhaul regulations for energy transmission projects worth tens of billions of dollars to give local communities more say and potential revenue akin to farmers who host wind farms.
