Social media companies will be threatened with $50 million fines as part of the Albanese government’s social media ban for children under the age of 16.
The legislation has been set to be introduced into parliament on Thursday in a bid to combat the negative health effects of social media on young people.
“The online safety amendment social media minimum age bill 2024 will amend the online safety act 2021 by introducing a minimum age of 16. “What’s missing is a deeper discussion on how we implement protections, otherwise we risk making ourselves feel better, like we have taken action, but teens and parents will not find themselves in a better place,” he said.
Digital Industry Group , which represents tech giants Meta, TikTok, Google and X said, “Online harms are real and must be addressed, yet the harms of a ban are real too.” The legislation will make it illegal for children under 16 to access social media platforms unless they meet specific age verification criteria.
This will impact millions of children and teenagers as some 97 per cent of youth use social media across an average of four platforms, surveys show.
