The government is considering extending the measure introduced to stop breakaway energy prices last year, despite warnings from industry it could chill investment and harm supply.
The extension of the cap would form part of the government's controversial mandatory code of conduct, which it first announced last year off the back of soaring energy prices.
A spokesperson for Energy Minister Chris Bowen revealed the government would release details of the new mandatory code of conduct for the gas industry"soon," with an announcement expected as soon as Monday. In a potential sign that the criticism struck a nerve, the government has signalled it may be willing to make"exceptions and exemptions" to help gas producers that pump additional supply into the domestic market.
