Labor will declare Australia’s first offshore wind regions on Friday, firing the start-gun for a growing number of projects that are aiming to capitalise on the country’s renewable energy ambitions.

Moving quickly to capitalise on the passage of legislation for Labor’s climate change target to reduce emissions by 43 per cent, Federal Energy minister Chris Bowen will announce five regions where offshore wind projects could be developed. It has set an aggressive target of having zero emission sources make up more than 80 per cent of Australia’s electricity mix by 2030, which would allow the country to meet its net zero by 2050 target.
