South Australian Labor has jumped first towards a by-election in Black, announcing a local school teacher as its candidate for the seat, which has been vacated by former opposition leader David Speirs.

"I've got sympathy for the people of this seat, people of Black, because they've had a lot of uncertainty over the last period," he said.Alex Dighton has been named to contest the seat of Black for Labor. But now Labor Premier Peter Malinauskas has been forced to defend just how long it is that he privately knew how much legal trouble the departing Liberal is truly in.
