Foreign Minister Penny Wong says the Labor Party promised to “stabilise the relationship” with China before the 2022 federal election and that is what they have done.

“Before the election, we said to the Australian people we would work to stabilise the relationship with China without compromising our sovereign interests, and that is what we’ve done,” Ms Wong told a press conference in Shanghai on Monday.

“We look forward to continuing to engage on many issues, including the continued removal of trade impediments and many other aspects.” Ms Wong said she will be attending the bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday night and will also be meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to talk with him about “how we can continue to navigate this relationship wisely”.
