EXCLUSIVE: Chris Murray said it is 'utterly unacceptable' that people have been getting sick from swimming at Scottish beaches.
A Labour MP has demanded the Scottish Government and Scottish Water “get their act together” over beach sewage.
“Some 15 per cent of the waste on the beach is wet wipes. The only way they get there is through the sewage system.” Murray demanded action, saying: “The first thing is monitoring. Then it’s Scottish Water and the Scottish Government getting their act together over infrastructure. The issue in England is private water companies focusing on their profits. We don’t have that excuse.”
“As part of this, we are on track to install 1,000 new monitors by the end of 2024 and we already have ‘intelligent waste water’ networks in place at four priority locations - including more than 230 sensors – with many more planned. A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “Expert analysis shows that the recent closure of Portobello beach was not sewage related. The water was analysed quickly and the quality of the water at Portobello beach was confirmed as returning to normal within two days. The public was made aware of the fact that no sewage was present and it is a matter of record.
