The Labour Party said it had ‘received a significant number of complaints regarding the conduct of members’ connected to the constituency party

A Labour constituency branch in Bolton has been suspended by the national party who said there were ‘concerns about its operation’. Bolton North East Constituency Labour Party were informed that all their officers would be ‘relieved of their positions and duties’ as the party conducted an investigation.

The decision was made by Labour’s national executive committee who said ‘all CLP meetings will cease until further notice’. In February this year, nine leading members of the party in the Bolton North East area quit their roles after accusing a ‘London clique’ of dictating the selection process for a Parliamentary candidate.Kirith Entwistle, an activist from the town was later selected as the general election candidate.

“The NEC has a duty to safeguard the integrity of CLPs, to ensure that they are properly run in line with the party’s rules and procedures and can operate fully, inclusively and democratically.” Mr Didsbury said that officers will be relieved of their positions and duties until the point where the CLP is reconstituted following the outcome of future investigations.

He said a convener would be appointed from outside the constituency, to set up the election campaign team.
