Toyota’s North American sales fell by 23 percent in April.

Vehicles are seen in a parking lot at the San Antonio Toyota plant, Monday, May 11, 2020. Toyota’s 12 plants, including the U.S. and Canada, have been closed since March 23 in what originally was supposed to be a two-day closing to sanitize the plants to protect workers from the coronavirus pandemic. The company planned on reopening the plants on May 4 but pushed the date to May 11.

Toyota gradually wound down production of the older Tundra model last year, so sales have bounced back this year with the new version.Overall U.S. sales of new vehicles boomed in spring 2021, when consumers were flush with cash and stimulus checks and states were distributing COVID-19 vaccines, which sparked more travel and optimism about the economy.

Toyota temporarily halved production at its San Antonio plant in late January because of rising numbers of COVID-19 cases and parts shortages. In late February, a cyber attack forced Toyota to halt production at its 14 factories in Japan. “The April sales pace may look disappointing compared with April 2021, but last April’s record sales pace was enabled by the combination of extremely strong consumer demand and enough inventory to turn that demand into actual sales,” said Thomas King, president of data and analytics at J.D. Power.
