Should we be worried?
On Saturday night, your Los Angeles Lakers were blown out 120-101 by the Orlando Magic in a surprisingly uncompetitive away loss. It dropped LA to a .500 record on the young 2023-24 season, while elevating upstart Orlando to a strong 4-2 start. It also knotted up the two teams' only two games this regular season at 1-1.
Los Angeles got thoroughly outworked on the glass by the Magic, 51-40. During his postgame presser, head coach Darvin Ham explained that the club's poor rebounding performance was tough to predict or plan against, as “You can’t scheme rebounding. You’ve got to want to get the damn ball. Plain and simple,” Ham said. “The shot goes up, if your opponent is in your area, you’ve got to get hits, put bodies on bodies and be the most aggressive one to the ball. That’s it. There’s no play I can draw up to get more rebounds. There’s no play I can draw up to have more guys there.
“Again, it’s something we’ve got to continuously work at and acknowledge when we’re doing it good, and do a good job and when we do a poor job," Ham added."Last game , we did a pretty good job with that. We had three guys double-digit rebounds. Tonight, it just wasn’t there.” To be fair, LA was missing three key rotation forwards who sure could have helped them grab some boards -- 6'7" Taurean Prince, 6'8" Rui Hachimura and 6'9" Jarred Vanderbilt all sat. as The good news for LA is that its next opponent, the Miami Heat, is significant smaller than Orlando, which boasted an ample frontline even with starting center Wendell Carter Jr. shelved.
