Calls are growing for the government to rapidly boost ADF personnel, with MPs pushing for foreign fighters to be enlisted and even for a Pacific “battalion”.

The Coalition and former senior defence officials have suggested the government should offer citizenship pathways to foreign nationals willing to serve in the Australian Defence Force, according to the Nine newspapers.

Picture: Department of Defence “We could export ourselves over there , train their people as well and also have a battalion over there in the Pacific Islands somewhere.” Australia’s Defence Force numbers have dropped dramatically after cutting 20,000 permanent employees in the early 1990s.

“Stop judging … these kids because they’ve got a little bit of a record or they’ve come in from public housing,” Senator Lambie said.
