'The costs of this work have increased significantly since the café was tendered, due to the extent of internal refurbishment being much greater than anticipated'

Work on the restoration and repair of a historic East Lancashire tourist attraction is ‘progressing well’ as a new bid for National Lottery cash is prepared.

But a report to Thursday’s full meeting of Burnley Council by finance boss Cllr Sue Graham reveals an initial bid for a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund failed. A new one is now being worked on.The refurbished Stable Cafe at the site is expected to reopen in the summer.

“The expression of interest that was submitted to the National Lottery Heritage Fund was not successful, but following discussions with senior NLHF staff, an amended proposal will be developed and submitted. The council has completed the external repairs and re-roofing of the Stables Café and is waiting for the tenant to commence the internal refurbishment.
