More than half a month's rain could fall across parts of England on Friday with yellow weather warnings in place

The Met Office says it was be a largely overcast end to the week in the Lancashire as torrential rain and thunderstorms sweep across other parts of England.

The rain is set to clear up by 4am Saturday morning with another cloud-filled day forecast and possible light showers around lunchtime. It is expected to be a pleasant evening as sunshine breaks through while mercury levels will hit 21C.More rain is forecast on Sunday with a mixture of sunshine and showers and highs of 20C. The trend will continue into Monday and Tuesday with more mixed conditions expected.

Holidaymakers beginning their summer getaway are advised to check the Met Office app and social media channels for updates and brace themselves for longer journey times. A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued by the Met Office for large parts of the South and the West Midlands between 6am and midday on Friday.

Met Office meteorologist Rachel Ayers said: "Given it is summer holidays, people are more likely to be wanting to be outside and travelling for holidays. There is a chance we could see driving conditions affected, leading to longer journey times.
