'The road will be built. People have been blinkered about this'
New road-building will happen around Lancaster despite suspension of ideas for a controversial M6 link near Galgate and Lancaster University, a Conservative councillor has said.
After a special meeting in 2021, Lancaster city councillors voted to work with other authorities on the south Lancaster project. But it came after a long debate and opposition from the Greens and some others. Coun Parr said in the past six years plenty of housing sites were identified. But the covid pandemic had impacted and now the supply of sites identified was just under two and a half years' worth. She added: "We need to work on this and we will."Green Coun Sue Tyldesley said: "I welcome this new work. It's unusual to move towards developing a new local plan but the decision at Lancashire to draw-back on south Lancaster was important.
Coun Gardiner then alleged: "NIMBYs in Lancaster may not want a new road. But the new Heysham road has created new opportunities for people to travel out of Morecambe without having to go through Lancaster. The Eden Project will bring benefits too and houses need to be built. I also know how much people need social housing.
