Rural village has become a magnet for 'entitled' 4x4 drivers - but residents still 'look out for each other'
Two hundred years ago, Tarleton was made an independent parish having previously been attached to Croston. Much has changed since then and the village once again stands at a crossroad as its future shifts further away from its agricultural past.
Mark Square, which has seen some trouble as an anti-social behaviour hotspot, boasts a range of shops, the well-recommended Gigi's Italian Restaurant, and a library which was saved from closure after a community campaign. It all sits on land which many may not realise was farmland within living memory.
Since then, a big change has been the building of an Aldi store on the edge of the village, just by the A565 and A59 junction. When those plans were first announced, some reacted with dismay and feared for the impact on existing businesses. After Aldi held public consultations and encouraged people to show their support, letters backing the plan flooded it into West Lancashire Borough Council’s planning department.
In a formal objection submitted to the council, one villager wrote: “There has already been an increase in the number of cars due to Aldi opening, this will only further impact the local community, at what is already a hazardous exit point onto the A59 heading towards the village. Cars turning right, exiting Aldi, are pulling out in front of traffic also heading towards Tarleton, and now you want to add more. Absolutely unbelievable.
But it’s far from true to say all feel that negatively. Cllr Joan Witter grew up in Hesketh Bank, Tarleton’s neighbouring village, and has seen a dramatic shift from farmland to residential space in that time. She said: “It’s changed undoubtedly. I’m 81, I remember when there used to be green fields all the way from Hesketh Bank to Tarleton. They were two totally different villages.
