The nation's first trial over a ban on gender-confirming care for children has ended and is now in the hands of a federal judge

on a ban on gender-confirming care for children ended Thursday, as Arkansas wrapped up its case defending the prohibition with testimony from an endocrinologist opposed to such treatments for minors.

“There remains a question as to whether the risks outweigh the benefits and whether alternatives exist," Hruz said. “It's still an area that needs scientific investigation." One brief — in a case regarding a school preventing a transgender teen from using the bathroom that corresponded with his gender identity — said “conditioning children into believing that a lifetime of impersonating someone of the opposite sex, achievable only through chemical and surgical interventions, is a form of child abuse."Arkansas was the first state to enact a ban on gender-confirming care for children, with Republican lawmakers in 2021of the legislation.

The state has argued that the prohibition is within its authority to regulate the medical profession. People opposed to such treatments for children argue they are too young to make such decisions about their futures.
