More than 50 Pioneer Valley residents have the option to buy their properties back from Queensland Hydro after its energy storage project was cancelled.

Ellen and Peter Everett are planning to re-open an eco-lodge to welcome tourists into the upper Pioneer Valley.Landowners in the Pioneer Valley, west of Mackay, will soon be given the option to buy back properties acquired for the Pioneer-Burdekin Pumped Hydro energy storage project.Letters will be sent to 57 former property owners asking if they are interested in buying their property back.

The LNP cancelled the contentious north Queensland project last month, citing concerns about the environmental impact and cost blowout.Project director Trish Auld from Queensland Hydro said the expression of interest process would start soon. The government-owned entity has packed up the last of its geotechnical exploration equipment with the last drill rig leaving last week, after nearly 18 months.Ellen and Peter Everett from Netherdale will buy back the property they sold to Queensland Hydro in 2022.

"Peter and I especially are hoping it will bring more young families to join our community and therefore join our school."The Platyus Playcare early childhood centre in nearby Eungella has felt the impact of families leaving the area in last couple of years. "I've already had one or two phone calls from families who are moving back up to the valley, so we are really hoping to have more families move back into the region," she said.ABC Tropical North: Liam O'ConnellOpposition leader Steven Miles visited Mackay last month and would not rule out a return to the project if Labor was re-elected.
