Meg Lanning is not happy at the pathway the world’s No.1 ODI batter is taking to the WBBL, and the usually diplomatic Stars skipper was very clear about her disappointment and frustration on Tuesday.
Batting great Meg Lanning has taken aim at star English import Nat Sciver-Brunt ahead of the Women’s Big Bash League season and revealed she is no certainty to return to international cricket this summer – or the Australian captaincy.
Sciver-Brunt, the world’s No.1 ranked one-day international batter, appears set to play for the Perth Scorchers despite not having nominated for the international players’ draft in September because of a knee injury. “As a club, at the Stars, we sort of feel like, or I certainly feel like, we didn’t get the chance to exercise our retention rights that we would have had to her, had she nominated for the draft, instead of coming in this way. Not only does that impact us this year, but moving forward as well.
The Scorchers did not wish to comment, but a source with knowledge of Sciver’Brunt’s situation said she had been reluctant to make herself available for only a handful of games when injured and unsure of her recovery timeline. However, she was now likely to play most of the tournament – if given clearance after issues are clarified.
But she said she had yet to decide whether she would tour India in December where the Australians will contest a white-ball series and a one-off Test, their first Test there since 1984. If she does return, Lanning said a decision on whether she regained the captaincy from Alyssa Healy had also yet to be made.
