Has WRC found its Max Verstappen? Esapekka Lappi hopes so, as tributes pour in for the youngest-ever world champion RallyNZ
Lappi, who shared the third GR Yaris with Sebastien Ogier this year, has watched Rovanpera dominate the WRC, winning six rallies, with five wins coming starting from first on the road.
“I don’t think it is the fans and spectators who think he is incredible, it is also most of the drivers that are thinking the same way,” said Lappi. “Definitely it is [a moment for the sport] but in the end I think that is really good for the sport and it is what the sport needs,” he added. “It needs heroes like Max Verstappen and that is exactly what is going to happen, hopefully.
Rovanpera’s success was not lost on his fellow WRC competitors as outgoing eight-time world champion Sebastien Ogier labelled last weekend’s Rally Zealand display as “amazing” after finishing second to the Finn.
