Opinion: Larry Grooms: Palmdale Teamsters aren’t being truthful about Amazon

Perhaps you’ve watched or read news stories out of Palmdale about the International Brotherhood of Teamsters forming a union of Amazon workers and then striking against the online retailer. “Amazon workers stage walkout at Palmdale warehouse as part of union fight with company,” reads on headline on KABC’s website. The Teamster even allege Amazon is refusing to recognize and honor their union contract.

These stories should snap the disinformation censors and the fact checkers into action. Despite the headlines, there is no such union inside Amazon. There is no Teamster union contract with Amazon. And the strike is weirdly irrelevant because the strikers don’t even work for Amazon. The claim made by the Teamsters union that they successfully organized Amazon workers lacks enough context to be labeled an outright falsehood. The reality is quite different.

More to the point, Amazon has clarified that Battle Tested Strategies has been terminated due to poor performance. Therefore, not only are these workers not employed by Amazon, but the company that actually does employ them no longer works for Amazon either. It appears that the Teamsters are attempting to get ahead of a pending ruling by the National Labor Relations Board that could significantly expand the join employer standard.

This tactic is part of an aggressive new strategy by the unions and pro-union politicians to circumvent the normal legislative process and fair union elections to significantly boost union membership through regulatory rule making.
