Unions representing hospitality workers in Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada, voted this week to authorize a strike.

The two unions represent around 60,000 workers in Reno and Las Vegas hotels, casinos and restaurants.

A strike is not inevitable. However, as the unions continue negotiations into next week, the workers can decide at any point to start on the picket line. Around 40,000 of the represented members are working under an expired contract that ended this month.• Vaughn Cockayne can be reached at
