Trial of the 'Islandmagee witches' saw eight women and one man found guilty of witchcraft in 1711
Ireland's last witch trial is to come alive through a series of exhibitions, workshops and events at Carrickfergus Museum this August.
The women, found guilty by a jury at County Antrim’s Criminal Assize Court held in Carrickfergus on 31 March 1711, were Janet Carson, Janet Latimer, Janet Main, Janet Millar, Margaret Mitchell, Catherine McCalmond, Janet Liston and Elizabeth Sellor. The programme of events will kickstart with interactive exhibition ‘Reimagining the Islandmagee Witches’ on 9 September 2023. It will include a range of interpretative experiences developed by the team. These include a virtual reality experience, animation, graphic novel and choice-driven video game.
Carrickfergus Museum is also offering a free creative writing workshop led by Kentuckian playwright and professor, Georgia Rhoades, on Saturday, September 9 from 10am – 2pm. There will also be a series of spectacular storytelling performances in October when the ‘Islandmagee Witch Trial’ will be brought to life through live storytelling performances with music and visual imagery created by professional story-teller Vicky McFarland and musician Lee McFarland. The 45 minute production, suitable for ages 12+, is based wholly on Andrew Sneddon’s extensive research into the trial.

Patients with short atrial arrhythmias do not benefit from anticoagulation, finds clinical trialAtrial high-rate episodes (AHRE) are short and rare atrial arrhythmias that resemble atrial fibrillation detected by implanted pacemakers, defibrillators, and loop recorders that enable long-term monitoring of heart rhythm. AHRE are found in 10–30% of patients with implanted devices. AHRE episodes resemble atrial fibrillation. Therefore, patients with AHRE are often offered treatment with blood thinners (oral anticoagulation) without ECG-documented atrial fibrillation. So far, the efficacy and safety of oral anticoagulation has never been tested in patients with AHRE.
