Jane Garrett, who died last week, complained to a journalist that Andrews didn’t support her in a dispute with an aggressive union leader.
In August 2016, a couple of months after she had resigned as Victoria’s Emergency Services Minister, Labor MP Jane Garrett gave me a long off-the-record interview in which she accused the secretary of the Victorian United Firefighters Union, Peter Marshall, of threatening her.
After Mr Andrews sided with Mr Marshall and the firefighters union in the CFA dispute, Ms Garrett resigned as a minister in June 2016. Around the same time she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy in 2017. On the evening of Saturday, October 30, last year, Ms Garrett rang Mr Smith and told him that her breast cancer, which she thought was cured, had spread to her skeletal system and she was seriously ill, according to two sources. She apologised for a lack of social contact in the previous months.Early in 2021 Ms Garrett suffered from a noticeable limp, which she told friends was probably a running injury. Rather than an injury, cancer had caused swelling in one of her legs, according to a friend.
