Latrell’s big brother sheds 25kg to earn second chance at Souths | mrchrisnico

It’s no surprise that a player named Mitchell has impressed South Sydney the most during the summer at training. But the twist in the tale is it’s not Latrell, but his heavyweight older brother, Shaquai.

A front-rower who once ballooned to 167kg as he battled depression and anxiety a few years ago, Shaquai, who has just dipped below 120kg, remains a chance to continue training throughout the year on a $1000-a-week deal, and has “NRL potential”, according to coach Jason Demetriou. “He played in our NSW Cup side last year, he wanted to give his footy career another crack, he lost a lot of weight and we saw enough in him to give him a full pre-season to see what kind of shape he can get himself into. To his credit, he’s been first class, dropped a lot of weight, moves really well and has good skill levels for a big man – his skill level is as good as any one of our middle forwards.

“He would have gone into that game with just three-and-a-half weeks of training and it would have been a big ask,” Demetriou said.
