As the Coalition prepares to launch an all-out attack on Finance Minister Katy Gallagher over her knowledge of Brittany Higgins’ rape allegations, Treasurer Jim Chalmers has come to the embattled Senator’s defence.

Senate Question Time is set to be dominated by suggestions Ms Gallagher misled parliament when she claimed in June 2021 that “no one had any knowledge” of Ms Higgins' allegations.

Ms Gallagher broke her silence on Saturday when she denied any wrongdoing, claiming her statement in the Senate was in response to claims put by Linda Reynolds that she knew about the allegations two weeks before they were aired in February 2021. Ms Gallagher’s department was also responsible for the massive payout to Ms Higgins in December 2022.As attacks on the government grow, the Treasurer dismissed any claims of impropriety.

“I have had the privilege of working alongside Katy in the Senate and like Jim I want to say there is no more ethical person in the Australian parliament than Katy Gallagher,” Mr Watt said.On Saturday, the Finance Minister admitted to having knowledge of the allegations before they were aired publicly but denied any wrongdoing.
