The winners of the prestigious Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes were announced today.
The $100,000, 103-year-old Archibald Prize for portraiture was first awarded in 1921. The $50,000 Wynne Prize, Australia’s oldest art prize for Australian scenery or sculpture with the first winner announced in 1897, was this year won by Djakaŋu Yunupiŋu withLaura Jones’ Archibald Prize-winning painting ‘Tim Winton’.
“This year, 46 per cent of finalists were first timers which is a higher percentage than previous years,” said Tunnicliffe, who is also head curator of Australian art at the Art Gallery of NSW. “The trustees chose lots of new young faces as subjects and artists,” he said. “I think this change has brought a fresh energy in all three prizes.
“We’ve got a wonderful inclusiveness of subjects this year – with some strong women in the mix,” Tunnicliffe said.Heartbreak High’
