Andy Sutcliffe will often drive for days in his 40-year-old truck to rescue travellers stranded on some of the country's most notorious outback roads.
An incoming call — which the self-proclaimed "Luddite" likes kept to a minimum — often means someone is stuck on the notorious Canning Stock Route , stranded on the "rough as guts" Anne Beadell Highway or broken down on the super-remote Connie Sue track.
The job requires regular multi-day rescue missions across some of the country's most hard-to-reach places. Mr Sutcliffe met wonderful people and had constant adventures, driving tourist-laden trucks through Mauritanian minefields and across narrow log bridges in the Congo."I spent a lot of time in the Middle East and I love the place," he says.He says part of what made the period so exciting was the lack of technology, only connecting with the outside world via post every two to four weeks, and navigating with a map and compass."It was much easier, less stressful times.
"These old Peugeots ruled Africa and particularly the Sahara regions. When we were travelling through the Sahara they were the most common taxis."
