At 43, divorced and penniless, Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef Kate Spencer reinvented herself in Australia and built a reputation as a true food pioneer.

So I started catering a lot in the western districts," Ms Spencer said.
Ms Spencer opened her last restaurant — Mistress Kate's — in one of Penola's National Trust buildings. "A shepherd's pie or a macaroni and cheese … really delicious food. And then make a really lovely cheesecake.Kate Spencer has a lot of recipe books. While she admits her knowledge makes for a good foundation, she cooks mostly with instinct.While Ms Spencer may think her life is "rather boring", the drawers of letters and thank you cards in her house suggest otherwise.
