The detective who led the investigation into the 19-year-old's disappearance has told a murder trial the operation was hampered by various factors including listening devices in the accused killer's home and car being installed incorrectly.
Missing security camera footage and "distorted" recordings from hidden audio devices hampered the 2002 investigation into Amber Haigh 's disappearance, a court has heard.Conversations captured by the hidden recording devices will be played before the judge-alone trial when it resumes on Monday next week.
Ms Haigh was a 19-year-old with an intellectual disability who lived in the Young region alongside her five-month-old son before she went missing on a trip to Sydney in June 2002. Her bank card was used to withdraw funds from a nearby ATM, but Mr Crea said officers were told the bank did not have a camera with footage of the machine.Mr Crea said police were also advised the train station did not have any footage from the time of Ms Haigh's disappearance, which he found "very strange".
The former detective said staff from the Department of Community Services refused to hand over details to police and did not cooperate with police looking to remove Ms Haigh's baby from the Geeveses' care. The court heard Mr Geeves reported the incident two days later and the matter was eventually discharged during a committal hearing in the Cootamundra courthouse.
