Richard Di Natale has resigned as Greens leader and will depart the Senate to spend time with his family knowing his is the only party “acknowledging the climate crisis we’re in”.
Mr Di Natale said “it’s the greatest honour of my life to be able to lead a movement that is committed to all of the things I believe so deeply in”.
Di Natale said his decision was made in order to spend more time with his young children, who are nine and 11 years old and who, in a few years’ time, are “probably not going to want to know their old man”. “I’m going to resign as a senator once my replacement has been chosen; I expect that’ll happen at some point towards the middle of the year,” he said. “I just want to be more present in their lives, that’s the bottom line.
