NSW Health estimates it will need to slash a fifth of its overall spending to avoid a funding shortfall of $7 billion to $10 billion, including a 10 per cent reduction of its workforce, 20 per cent fewer emergency presentations and 20 per cent fewer outpatient visits.The slides said "adjusting" the health workforce to reduce costs by 10 per cent would save $1 billion.
"If we allow current trends to continue, a widening fiscal gap will emerge between what the state government receives, and what it spends on the services and infrastructure people expect," the report said, predicting an overall funding gap of $17 billion by mid-century. In June, the government announced the largest ever health budget for the state, with $26.7 billion allocated towards a variety of programs – including nearly $3 billion to recruit 8300 frontline staff over the next four years, and $10 billion on infrastructure.
