The former Coca-Cola Amatil chief executive is calling for a better integrated education system across schools, vocational education and universities.

Australia’s fragmented education system is a major stumbling block in any attempt to address skill shortages, says corporate heavyweight Alison Watkins, the chancellor of the University of Tasmaniabetween education providers, industry, government and unions would be a significant step forward.

of Australia, Wesfarmers and CSL, said that without reform around the delivery, cost and type of educational qualifications that are available, skill shortages could only be addressed with a tightly targeted skilled migration program which included incentives for international students to stay in the country following graduation.

Tasmania’s distinctive approach to skills development included the provision of programs that moved seamlessly across TAFE and the university so people could work while gaining important qualifications that would improve their life outcomes. However, in recent years the university introduced an audacious plan that, when fully realised, will transform the state. It includes the rollout of a new class of university degrees – called associate degrees – that are shorter, cheaper and more vocationally focused than full bachelor degrees.
