Learning from Ben Carson’s prejudice, here's how leaders should talk about transgender people:

Suppose for a moment that Ben Carson really did misspeak.

But the fact that talking about transgender issues can be complex does not excuse leaders from meeting the challenge – transgender people are present in every large workforce, and they’re part of every company’s customer set. In fact, at this point in the conversation, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone in the LGBT+ movement, including transgender people, who has not occasionally accidentally screwed up someone’s pronouns. Like many grammar aficionados, I have at times struggled with the singular “they” – which has nevertheless entered common usage.

Don’t be defensive. Accept that you’ve made an error – correct it in the moment, or if the moment has passed, make sure that you take a special opportunity to clarify your intent, both with people who were present at the time, and with your organization more broadly, as appropriate/necessary.
