Leaving your lawn unmowed is good for birds, bees, water conservation and water quality. No Mow May has become an international movement.
There's a movement afoot to discourage people from doing what this man is doing — mowing the lawn — at least in the month of May. Proponents of No Mow May say unkempt lawns are good for birds, bees and the environment. If you're tempted to take out the lawn mower this weekend, don't. Just, which would like us all to think about participating in something called No Mow May.
"Mowing higher or less frequently could produce a surprise splash of native Texas color and pollinator resources in your yard!" SARA says."It could also make it look lusher with less watering."SARA acknowledges that what works in the U.K. can't be cut-and-pasted to South Texas without some tweaks. Our growing season starts earlier and ends later, and it rains a lot less here.
Another potential downside to No Mow May is that non-native plants are pervasive in people's yards here. Sparing them the mower's blade could allow them to gain a stronger foothold and beat up on native species even more than they already do.Start gradually. Leave part of your lawn unmowed and see what happens."You may find that you have native plants like common sunflowers, straggler daisies, native petunias and spiderwort that come up without needing extra care," SARA says.
Also, you could keep mowing, but put the blade at a higher setting. If you let your lawn grow to a height of 3 inches, it'll withstand the summer heat better, and it won't need to be watered as much. Proponents of No Mow May say high grass, weeds and wildflowers are better for the environment than closely cropped turf.

Thailand's election may deliver mandate for change, but opposition victory may not assure powerVoters disaffected by nine years of plodding rule by a coup-making army general are expected to deliver a strong mandate for change in Thailand’s general election Sunday. But a predicted victory by the allies of Thaksin Shinawatra, whose ouster by coup 17 years ago plunged the country into prolonged instability, has caused concern for an unhindered democratic transition. Dissatisfaction with incumbent Prayuth Chan-ocha is high. But weariness and even anger at the military’s habitual interference in politics is a major factor. The favored prime minister candidate appears to be Thaksin’s daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
