Leeds gave themselves hope of survival as a stoppage time equaliser against Brighton lifted them out of the relegation zone.
Leeds prevented a fourth straight defeat to go above Burnley by a solitary point, but the Clarets still have a game in hand. That news did nothing to spur them on as the visitors took a 21st-minute lead as Welbeck raced on to Yves Bissouma’s pass. He comfortably side-stepped Diego Llorente’s challenge and dinked an excellent finish beyond goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
With time running out, the home fans sensed it was not to be their day and a section turned on the club’s hierarchy.
