England sent Archie Gray back to Leeds United with five full matches in his legs across 13 days and Daniel Farke was left wondering where the wider strategy lies in developing the country's next generation
Going into the international break, England’s under-19 coaching staff knew Archie Gray had played two full matches across four days for Leeds United. Simon Rusk would go on to select the 17-year-old in all three internationals over the following nine days and never took him off early.
“We have many mental awareness days and player wellbeing days and talk on Sunday mornings about responsibility, we have to take care of players, but, when it comes down to decisions, it’s we need to win three points,” he said. “I’m not sure if it makes sense to play in that many games for his development because it doesn’t help his development because he played already on a much higher level, with all respect to the under-19s, and we risk injuries, we risk him being burnt out at any point.
“On a club level that’s important, do we have to win titles or develop players, and the same also for the country? I wouldn’t blame any coach for playing the best players. “On youth level, it’s always like what do we want? This is not up to the head coach or the managers, it’s more like on a higher level to discuss what is necessary for the players.
