Matter and Shape, as this latestis called, was clearly not just about the shock of the new. And in an era of constant novelty, that was trulySo, on one stand crystal glasses and carafes from early 1900s Vienna were displayed alongside pieces by the same Austrian manufacturer through the 20th century to now.

On another, ceramics from venerable Tuscan company Bitossi ran from quirky 1960s figurines to larger contemporary creations such as tables and stools.A little further on was a sneak peek of a new series of delicately sculptural metal works – including side tables, a screen, candleholders and a vanity – by French superstar designer Ronan Bouroullec. The collection, called Baton (a reference to its slender lines) and manufactured by BD Barcelona, will officially hit the market in May. “I wanted Matter and Shape to feel both experiential and educational, promoting the reality that design is a tangible and intangible part of our lives 24/7,” says Australian-born, Paris-based creative director of the fair, Dan Thawley. “It was important to establish it as a multidisciplinary platform from the outset, accepting projects from heritage brands as much as from the fashion or arts and craft space and pure industrial desig
