NRL: The NRL 360 panel continue the discussion regarding Kalyn Ponga withdrawing from Kangaroos selection and question whether he is eligible to play for New Zealand.
Rugby league’s most iconic living legend Ron Coote has warned Kalyn Ponga he will regret the decision he made this week for the rest of his life. It’s fair to say Coote’s initial response was complete shock.
Coote, 79, played in nine grand final and won six premierships during a career that also included 23 Tests for Australia, along with captaining his country. To put it in perspective, Ponga is now on a reported $1.4 million-a-season, well over twice as much as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. It also certainly backs up Andrew Johns’ bold prediction that the player currently on $300,000 could be worth around $900,000 when Trindall hits the open market on November 1.
Plenty of experts and critics have been quick to shoot down the price tag, basically saying it would be madness to fork out that sort of money on the back of one standout performance. And with a stack of senior halves nearing the end of their careers including Daly Cherry-Evans, Adam Reynolds, Cody Walker, Ben Hunt and Chad Townsend, Trindall’s lack of big match experience may be overlooked by the proven willingness of battling clubs to pay on potential to lock up the best available talent.
Now one for the Roosters’ true believers ahead of their blockbuster showdown with the Storm in Melbourne.
