Former Australian coach Darren Lehmann believes chief selector George Bailey's closeness to the team hinders his ability to make difficult selection decisions. Lehmann argues for a more detached selectorial approach, capable of delivering harsh messages when necessary. He also suggests that some players remain in the team for too long, highlighting the need for stronger selection policies.
Former Australian player and coach Darren Lehmann has claimed chief selector George Bailey is too close to the team to make the tough calls. Australia bounced back from a nightmare first Test to level the Border-Gavaskar series at 1-1, and are on top in the third Test, but question marks still remain over the current team. Nathan McSweeney, who won the race to open the batting following David Warner’s retirement, is the youngest member of the team at 25 and the only player under 30.
“I would like him sitting up watching in a selectors’ box somewhere and be able to make his own decisions. “My preference is the selector to be able to make decisions within a selection group and deliver a hard message if they have to. Make a hard decision if they have to for the betterment of Australian cricket. “Now, you can’t do that sometimes if you’re too close because you actually get too emotional and you care about the players.
