Despite the austere times, politicians are finding funds to save the Wests Tigers ground that has been part of Sydney life since 1934.
We can but admire the alacrity with which governments can suddenly come to the aid of the venerated suburban ground Leichhardt Oval.
But with state and federal politicians repeatedly telling us the times call for austerity, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has let the cat out of the bag, contacting Wests Tigers chief executive Shane Richardson last Thursday and confidentially promising $20 million for Leichhardt Oval.said the current investment pledge sits at $40 million, with Inner West Council and the NSW state government indicating they would each invest $10 million on top of the $20 million from the federal government.
