Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese returns with a devastating yet beautifully rendered film exposing America's shameful history of genocidal violence.
Martin Scorsese's 27th feature film — an urgent, devastatingly bleak crime drama about colonialism and murder — arrives right in time to rattle the collective Australian psyche in the aftermath of the Voice referendum.
Lily Gladstone made her film debut alongside Benicio del Toro in French film Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian .Inspired by real events and based on journalist David Grann's non-fiction book of the same name, Killers sees Scorsese once again burrowing into the underbelly of American history with a morality tale of greed and political power.
Into this microcosm of American frontier life comes Ernest , a freshly demobbed soldier whose Uncle William "King" Hale is one of the pillars of the local settler elite. "Lily is absolutely astonishing in this movie … She carries the entire film and the story," DiCaprio told British Vogue. It doesn't take long before you realise King is something of a matchmaker, and the two are in fact soon married — but there's a dark side to their union.
Much later in the film, when Jesse Plemons arrives in a huge cowboy hat playing a softly spoken and methodical FBI agent, the strands of this criminal conspiracy — which stretch as far into respectable town society as the local doctors and the Masonic lodge — seem almost too far-fetched to be true. In many of these killing scenes, Scorsese places executioner and victim — who usually know each other — in the same frame, to emphasise the betrayal between them.
