Lessons in Chemistry showrunner Lee Eisenberg and director Sarah Adina Smith discuss building out the best-selling novel and working with Brie Larson.

Summary Apple TV+ is headed for the '50s in the new show Lessons in Chemistry, starring Brie Larson. Based on Bonnie Garmus' novel by the same name, the eight-episode drama follows a brilliant lab technician named Elizabeth Zott , whose journey to becoming a scientist is halted by a terrible incident at her university and the oppressive nature of patriarchal society.

And I think that was such an opportunity there. There would be times when there would be the mention of a little piece of Elizabeth's backstory that it was like, "Oh, what if we saw all of that?" Or a paragraph that would talk about two friends being pen pals, or two unlikely people being pen pals that I was like, "Oh, that could be episode seven of the show."

Sarah Adina Smith: Well, knowing that this was a period piece set in the 1950s, we wanted to make sure cinematically, that you feel like it's a world that you can get lost in that doesn't just feel like a stereotype of the 1950s. And we wanted it to feel like a contemporary story. Sarah Adina Smith: It's really a mark of Brie's intelligence that she identified this material and this character to play because there's so much about Brie Larson that is like Elizabeth Zott and vice versa actually. Brie is just so incredibly smart, very, very logical, extremely hardworking. And I suspect, like Elizabeth Zott, she's someone who often, because she happens to be a beautiful woman, doesn't always get taken seriously intellectually.

Lee Eisenberg: Sure. The character of Harriet was one of the main characters in the book. And one of the first conversations I had with Bonnie was talking about changing Harriet and making it a black female lawyer who lived in this community called Sugar Hill. And we had a historical consultant named Dr. Shamell Bell, and we spoke really tirelessly with her to make sure that we got the story right.
