Donna Fraser, Head of Inclusion and Engagement at Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, shares some of her thoughts as the event gets under way

My diary over the last few weeks has been extremely diverse so let me share some fabulous highlights… I joined a session which addressed how sport can support mental wellbeing – the young people in the group really want to see more sport in their schools, which was encouraging. So back to the Lakes to London Challenge. For those who know me, I hate the cold. I’m not a fan of swimming and I was a former sprinter, so what do you think I am doing?

All had passionate individuals who felt part of a community to share and support each other. The Armed Forces Family Working Group is the most recent group set up and in that time, it was amazing to see how many ex-armed forces personnel are working at the Games, some from Commonwealth nations including India, Canada and Australia and those are the ones we know of.

We went to the NEC to check on accessibility and University of Birmingham to update on our safeguarding provision. The Large Festival Community Engagement Fund was established to support our community engagement objectives; celebrating diversity by amplifying our existing community engagement activity, connecting, informing, and inspiring local people to feel that the Games is something they feel part of and can actively participate in, providing an engagement platform to support Games opportunities that include skills development, training and jobs and providing an intergenerational / family engagement...
